Help Save Trees in Port Gamble Forest Heritage Park

When Kitsap County, with support from community donations, Washington State, and other partners, acquired the land that now makes up Port Gamble Forest Heritage Park, the timber company retained the right to harvest the trees again as they mature. That right expires in 2042, after which commercial logging in the park will end.

In the meantime, the community has stepped up to protect portions of the forest from additional logging by raising funds to permanently retire those timber rights. In 2022, Our Forest Fund (OFF) led a successful effort that protected 756 acres at a cost of about $5,850 per acre.

Now, thanks to a new state appropriation and additional funds raised from the public—largely through the efforts of Our Forest Fund and Forterra—another 300 acres of prime forest habitat in the southern end of the park are within reach of permanent protection.

The campaign needs to raise $2 million by the end of this year and has already secured over half of that amount.
