Mission

Kitsap Environmental Coalition works to Keep Kitsap Green through education and advocacy.

We champion the protection and restoration of the Kitsap County interconnected environment for the health and well-being of all life. Our environment should include clean air and water, productive soils, biodiverse and healthy habitats, wildlife corridors, and a balance of natural, rural, and urban spaces.

Purpose

Keep Kitsap Green can also be expressed by the science and policy term Net Ecological Gain (NEG), which endeavors to prevent environmental degradation, and create positive gains for nature. In effect, restoring ecological balance to the natural system.

KEC is working to build a strong community network of Kitsap County staff, elected officials, organizations, and the general public who support NEG, while also promoting a healthy balance between rural and urban communities.

Inspiring an informed and engaged public is key to building our community network.

Principles

We acknowledge our presence on the ancestral lands of the Coast Salish people.

Build community by forming honest, respectful relationships with all people affected by KEC work.

Use scientific data and inquiry methods for decision‐making.

Support nature’s well-being locally and more broadly within the Pacific Northwest ecosystem.

Embrace inclusion and recognize we all bring different experiences, talents, perspectives, and strengths to KEC.

Who We Are

KEC is a non-profit 501(c)(3) educational organization, run entirely by dedicated volunteers. Currently nearly 1000 people are involved.

KEC is honored to have everyone from high school students to retirees in its ranks. KEC actions cover a wide range of education and advocacy.
KEC members celebrate one year anniversary, in 2019, at Point No Point.

Our Story

Since its inception in 2018, the Kitsap Environmental Coalition has grown from a group of concerned citizens objecting to the aerial spraying of toxic chemicals over clear-cut timber harvest near residential areas, to an increasingly influential stakeholder in county planning and implementation. Our message is that together in respectful, thoughtful, caring, and scientifically based conversations, we can address the county’s growth, water, housing, and recreational needs while protecting natural spaces, habitat, and the rural areas of the county.

How We Work

KEC work is totally done through volunteers. Our work groups are organized through a volunteer Steering Committee. A volunteer Board of Directors has overall responsibility for the organization's policies and practices.
