The Pacific Northwest Handbook of Ecological Forestry
Alex Budd will start with The Changing Landscape of Federal Forest Policy
An overview of federal forest management and the forest defense movement--from the creation of the National Forest Management Act to the timber wars, the NW Forest Plan, the Salvage Rider--as well as covering many of the current proposed policy changes by the Trump Administration--from the Roadless Rule rescission to the NWFP revision and Trump's timber focused Executive Orders.
Seth Zuckerman will bring us down to earth, literally, as an ecological forestry practitioner and writer with a focus on Pacific Northwest forests, including local Kitsap/West Sound context. He and Kirk Hanson have written the ultimate handbook on managing trees for sustainable wood harvest as well as recreation, inspiration, and a range of cultural connections.
Together, with a Q&A we'll figure out next steps on how to get to sustainability with what is under our control:
- Engage with federal‐policy processes (public comment, local advocacy)
- Participate in local forestry initiatives (volunteer groups, land trusts, community forests)
- Use local practice to inform and influence higher-level policy.
